March is officially designated as National Reading Awareness Month – a month to motivate all Americans, young & old, to read every single day.
Reading is not only a favorite pastime of many, it also has many benefits, regardless of age. It is the foundation of learning and vital to improving our educational and professional careers. Reading also has immediate and long-lasting health benefits such as an increase in cognitive function, memory , vocabulary, empathy and decreased levels of stress. So get a cup of tea, sit back and relax and keep on reading…
Share your love of reading.
The best way to encourage our children to develop a love of reading is to model it for them. Let them see you read, share what you’re reading and read to them. We can all encourage a love of reading in our children and students by reading even more often, whether in school, at libraries, or at home. Designate a reading room, corner or chair to make the ritual of reading a fun, relaxing activity to look forward to.
Why read aloud?
Reading out loud to children is one of the single most important activities adults can do to prepare children for school and learning to love reading themselves. Research has shown that, by age 3, gaps in brain development appear between children whose parents read aloud to them and those whose parents don’t. Currently only about 48 percent of young children in America are read to every day. Dr. Seuss summed it up perfectly with this quote: “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild to pick up a book and read to a child!”
National Read Aloud 15 Minutes campaign encourages parents and educators to read out loud to children for 15 minutes every day throughout the month of March, in the hopes of developing the habit (and love) of reading that will last a lifetime.
All of us here at The Simple Stencil obviously love the written word. We began our woman owned small business 19 years ago because of the inspiration that certain quotes, poems & phrases brought to our lives. We developed creative ways to display these words in our homes & schools to inspire, motivate, enrich and beautify our surroundings. This may be why we have so many designs about reading and books that promote this love in others. Browse our large library of wall quotes and enhance the surroundings in your children’s rooms, playrooms, classrooms, libraries, etc.
Now go grab that book you’re wanting to finish, grab a cup of tea and cozy up for at least 15 minutes today to celebrate Reading Awareness Month with us. Don’t have that favorite book handy? This blog post may offer some more inspiration until then…
